What To Expect To Go Wrong On Move-In Day

By Madison White on September 27, 2016

None of us want move-in day to go wrong, but sometimes, hiccups are inevitable. The very act of packing up everything and moving it to a different location entails something unwanted happening. Really, it is a bad attitude that makes a small problem into a large one which means simply being aware of what might happen is all the more important.

Here’s what to expect to go wrong on move-in day.

1. Timing

In your head, you hope to arrive at the office, sign your lease in just minutes, unload your car effortlessly, and have the whole apartment unpacked and ordering pizza before dinner. Inevitably, this will not be the case. Especially if you’ve enlisted the help of others, which is generally helpful, you’re going to be waiting around.

If you have a roommate, their schedule may not align directly with yours. They may work slower, faster, more sporadically than you. This is okay! Realizing that moving isn’t just a one day thing will make the stress of getting things done by a certain time far less terrible. Moving generally takes at least a couple weeks to get everything unpacked, hung, and set where you want it.

2. Space

Your new place may be a bigger place than your last, but don’t expect not to be crunched on moving day. You’re always going to have less space than you need. Looking at your room all put up and laid out, it may not look like a lot, but having it all sitting on your floor in boxes, it certainly does. This means stacking, rearranging, shuffling, squeezing, and a whole host of other things that seem like a hassle. But don’t worry, your space won’t be like this forever.

3. Understanding

Moving with others means moving with multiple moving styles. Some people drag out the process while others will be as quick as possible. If you’re moving in with someone you haven’t lived with before, don’t expect to be on the exact same wavelength. You likely already have an idea of where you want things and how things should be moved and placed, but make sure to keep your options open to their wants as well. Otherwise, your move-in day will only lead to a whole lot of pointless arguments that stress you out further.

4. Perfectionism

On a similar note, you may have an overwhelming desire for everything to go right on move-in day. However, no matter how much you plan, know that something will likely go wrong that’s out of your control. The weather may be bad. The person driving your trailer gets stuck in traffic. Some of your stuff gets lost along the way. Whatever it is, make sure to keep an open mind to things going wrong and don’t let it ruin everything!

5. Food

If you’re moving, keep in mind that you’re also moving into an empty fridge. You may be able to trudge along a few of your non-perishables, but the majority of that space will be empty. Tragic. Keep this in mind because moving takes a lot of grunt work and you, and the people around you, will be very hungry at some point.

Maybe buy a little something to take with you and snack on beforehand or have the plan to order pizza at a certain time. Don’t expect to wait until everyone, including yourself, is starving and angry before figuring out anything to do for food.

6. Broken or lost things

Unfortunately, moving isn’t foolproof either. No matter how much bubble wrap you have or labeling of boxes you do, something is bound to be dropped that shouldn’t be or end up in the wrong place. Hopefully you’ll be able to combat this with a little organization, but that doesn’t mean it is prevented from ever happening. If you have certain special things, try and be sure that you’re the one carrying and placing them when you’re moving, just in case.

7. Exhaustion

Even so, moving day is often exciting. You get a whole new place to call your own for whatever amount of time you’ll be there. You’ll be excited, but don’t overestimate your abilities to get everything done in a day. At first, you’ll be raring to go, hauling boxes left and right, yet when it comes to making decisions, setting up, and a whole host of other things moving entails, you’ll be downright exhausted. And this is okay!

Because of this, make sure you do the most important things first like setting up a bed and getting your toiletries out. The fiddly decorative stuff can be done later when you have more energy.

Be proud of yourself for moving, even if it wasn’t entirely smooth. Hopefully these small tips and tricks to combat the sometimes inevitable will help you get through a stressful day with a little less trouble.
