How To Best Accessorize For Your First Day Of Work

By Amanda Cohen on August 29, 2016

Your first day of work is never easy. You do not know what to expect, you don’t know what your co-workers will be like, and you do not know how to organize yourself for success. You are jumping into the abyss and it is normal to be scared.

However, I am here to help you check one major worry off your list: how to best accessorize your business-casual outfit. I could tell you about where to buy a nice pantsuit or a nice dress, but that is honestly pretty self-explanatory and not worth our time. It is time to dive into the real world everyone, and these accessories will help you dive in with style.

Business-casual attire can be pretty boring most of the time and it is very difficult to show off your personal unique style. That’s why finding the perfect accessories is so important when dressing for your first day of work. You want to look appropriate, but you also want to just be yourself.

Read on if you want to learn more about how to personalize the blue or black pantsuit and/or simple blue or black A-line dress that you have to wear!

Chunky Necklace

Chunky necklaces are all the rage these days, and they go perfectly with a simple dress or suit. You need to find a nice balance between extravagant and tacky, and this is honestly a difficult feat.

There are so many different directions you can take this look in. You can go for just one solid-colored necklace with beautiful beading, or maybe a multi-colored necklace with more minimal beading (you don’t want to look like a clown). Turquoise and gold is a nice combination, as is purple and silver.

You never want to choose too aggressive colors, like hot pink, because they tend to look unprofessional. I personally love the chunky pearl necklace look (fake pearls obviously because I’m only a college student). It’s classic, sleek and poised.

Taylor Swift-Style Purse

Taylor Swift is notoriously known for holding her purses in a delicate manner. The reason behind this, in my opinion, is because her purses have small thick handles and the body of the purses are boxy.

Big purses like the ones I am speaking of have lots of room for files, important notes, and general business stuff. Or, if you’re anything like me, you wear a bag like this and pretend there is important stuff in it, when there is really only your wallet and a pair of sunglasses inside.

I would recommend buying a bag that is either black, grey, or beige/nude. You also want to ensure that the material is matte rather than shiny, as it looks more business-casual and professional.

Matte Lipstick

I am not saying to go all Kylie Jenner on your lips, but it is important to make your lips look presentable. Obviously you want to avoid having chapped lips (Aquaphor and Burt’s Bees are lifesavers), but that is not what I am here to talk about.

Lipstick screams classy professionalism. I prefer a matte lip for work opposed to a glossy lip because I feel the glossy tone looks more like something you would wear to a party. I recommend wearing a deep red lipstick or a dark pink lipstick.

You never want to wear bright, almost neon-colored red because it is very unprofessional. So pucker up and get ready to take the work world by storm!

Wristwatch

Wristwatches are extremely professional looking; even if you prefer to use your phone to tell the time, I highly suggest investing in a watch.

When choosing a watch, you want something simple and classic — you don’t want anything studded with rhinestones or anything with a brightly colored leather band. Michael Kors and Marc Jacobs are two fantastic designers to purchase a watch from, as they last a long time, and they give off a Rolex-vibe.

If your boss asks you what time it is, you want to be able to tell him/her without having to pull out your phone. The best part about wristwatches is that you can stack them with cute bracelets and bangles (but not too many because that becomes a little too aggressive for the workplace).

You should either buy a watch that’s gold, rose gold, or silver because the colors are simple and elegant and can be mixed and matched with various colored jewelry.

I hope that this article helped to relieve some of your work-related stress and helps to ensure that you dress for success! Always stay true to your style and use the tips and make them your own so that your co-workers can see the real, amazing, unique you!

I wish all of my readers good luck with their work endeavors and whatever fashion opportunities that come up!
